Have A Home Business? How To Verify Your Business On Google Without Showing The World Your Address

There is a misconception that you need to list your physical address on Google for all the world to see in order to verify your business. Not true!

What does it mean to have Google verify your business?

You google a business and Google shows the business information on the right side of the search results. The owner provides the information including photos, business hours, and information about the business. Users can then review your business. Google an established restaurant or business nearby and you will see this result.

Once you verify your business, only your city will show on the Google listing.

The image below is an example of a Verified Business on Google with only the city listed.

If you work out of your home, you may not want to list your home address on Google. It’s already bad enough that email campaigns, such as through MailChimp, must have a business address. At least with email campaigns you can use a P.O. Box. MailChimp is pretty awesome FYI… other than having to list a mailing address.

To verify your business on Google, it must be a physical mailing address. It cannot be a P.O. Box. However, you do not have to actually list your address on Google.

Steps to Verify Your Business on Google

  1. Go to https://www.google.com/business/

  2. Sign in if you use Gmail or click Start Now

  3. Enter your business name

  4.  Enter your physical mailing address (not a P.O. box)

  5.  Check the following boxes:

  • “I deliver goods and services to my customers.”

  • “Hide my address (it’s not a store)”

  6.  Select Next and answer all the remaining questions

  7.  A postcard will be mailed to you within a week or two. Enter the code in the link they give you, finish setting up your profile, and your business will be verified on Google!

If you’re a part of the gig economy, work for yourself without an office for people to visit, or deliver your services to people, this is a great way to increase your brand awareness, SEO, and consumer trust without having to provide your home address to the masses.

Good luck out there and let us know if you have any questions!
